Today’s Installment: Flea Free Pops

For a fun treat for Fido or Fluffy,  add 8 drops of Flea Free All Natural Food Supplement into each hollow of an ice cube tray and freeze.

When frozen, place pops in a Ziploc bag and they are ready at any time to float in their water bowl for extra fun and flavor.

We’ve found that cats especially like to play with the ice cubes as they float on top of the water. Dogs coming in from the heat outside also like cooling off their tongues.

Our foam packing material is serving a 2nd life. We are reusing it to ship our products to our customers. The original use was to provide a way to ship ice cream cones without breakage. We found it the perfect way to ship our products to our customers, therefore reusing a material that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

We challenge our customers to reuse this packaging as well. Every little bit we can do will help our environment.

Tempting as it may be to simplistically consider fleas as horrible insects, the bane of dogs everywhere, poisoning your dog in a vain attempt to wipe fleas out of existence doesn’t really make sense. Even though more than half a billion dollars annually are spent on products that kill fleas in that vain pursuit. Of course fleas can make dogs (and everyone else in the household) perfectly miserable. But it’s not as if using toxic flea killing chemicals is the only way to control fleas. When we attempt to get rid of our dogs’ fleas by utilizing chemicals that are toxic to the brain and nervous system, that may disrupt hormone (endocrine) systems, and that cause cancer, it’s sort of like burning the house down to get rid of ants – effective, sure, but what are you left with?

1. The puppy’s skin: Smooth, clean and shiny with no sores or bumps.
2. Puppy should not be scratching or biting at herself constantly – could mean fleas.
3. If she more than 10-12 days old, her eyes should be clear with no redness or discharge.
4. Scratching at his eyes could mean there’s an infection.
5. Vomiting or coughing could indicate an illness.
6. Look for a firm stool that is not watery or bloody.
7. She should be able to walk/run without any limp.
8. When petting his sides, you should be able to slightly feel the ribs – they shouldn’t be visibly protruding from the skin.

How To Give A Cat A Pill

You want me to take what?

1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat’s mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.
3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.
4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws with left hand. Open jaws again and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.
5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse in from the garden.
6. Kneel on floor with cat, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head with one hand while holding wooden ruler next to mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat’s throat vigorously.
7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail. Get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.
8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to hold cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, open mouth and blow down drinking straw.
9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans and drink one beer to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse’s forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.
10. Retrieve cat from neighbor’s shed. Get another pill. Open another beer.
11. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.
12. Call fire department to retrieve the cat from the top of the tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat.
13. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room. Sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.
14. Pay a professional to administer the pill to your cat.

On Saturday April 24, we headed over to Central Florida Earth Day 2010 at Lake Eola Park in Orlando, FL. We had a great time there, met a lot of great people and learned a lot. The weather was great and our kids (8 and 6) even had a great time collecting souvenirs and participating in the kid events.

Here are a few Eco-facts we picked up:

• The roots of a tree can stop erosion AND clean polluted rainwater.
• Two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by ocean and is home to 97% of all life.
• In the northeast Pacific Ocean, circling currents have amassed an immense flotilla of trash at least as large as Texas. It is known as the Pacific Garbage Patch.

Next year we will look forward to having a booth and sharing our natural pet products with attendees and other vendors.
