Gift Idea for Cat Lovers

Control-a-Cat Remote Control

Control-a-Cat Remote Control

The Control-a-Cat remote control (“No batteries required – powered by wishful thinking”) is a great novelty gift idea offered by ThinkGeek.com. Buttons include “Remain Aloof”, “Land on Feet”, and “Stop Hissing / Scratching / Attacking”, among others.

“Cats are known for many things. The dexterity to always land on their feet and the cleanliness of their fur coats. The ability to knock over a lamp or slam into a screen door and casually continue along as if nothing happened.”

“Cats are not known, however, for their ability to learn and obey the commands of their owners. That’s where the Control-a-Cat Remote Control can come in handy.”

“Simply point at your cat, press buttons on the remote and hope for the best.”

Available at ThinkGeek for $7.99.

Who is Smarter – a Dog or a 2 Year Old Kid?

Filed under: Intelligence — Sam @ 7:25 pm

The short answer? It’s a tie, roughly speaking, according to Live Science.

The finding is based on a language development test, revealing average dogs can learn 165 words (similar to a 2-year-old child), including signals and gestures, and dogs in the top 20 percent in intelligence can learn 250 words.

Top 10 Pet-Friendly Cities in America

So what are the top 10 pet-friendly cities in America? Depends on who you ask I suppose! Here are three opinions:

According to MSNBC:

  1. San Diego

It’s always beach weather in San Diego, and this city boasts three off-leash beaches, including the Coronado Dog Beach on Coronado Island close to the very pet-friendly Loews Hotel, where pooches are pampered as much as their pet-parents.

There’s a long list of pet-friendly restaurants in the city, including many trendy places in the downtown Gaslight District that welcome pets in many outdoor sections.

You can take your dog kayaking, surfing or simply rent a boat in the marina and enjoy the smell of the ocean and great views of the skyline.

  2. Chicago

The windy city boasts lots of excellent pet-friendly hotels in the vicinity of stylish Michigan Avenue.

Be sure to stop by the trendy Tails in the City pet boutique at One East Delaware Place (off Michigan Avenue) and pick up some treats for your dog, or let him try on the latest collars and accessories — this is where Oprah shops for her pooches. And the lakefront is a wonderful place to enjoy a long leisurely walk.

  3. Seattle

Like all Kimpton Hotels, the Alexis Hotel in downtown Seattle is exceptionally pet friendly and a great location to visit many popular tourist destinations, including the famous Pike Place Market.
Be sure to put on your “To Do List” a visit to Norm’s Eatery and Ale House at 460 N. 36th Street. This popular restaurant is named after a dog and the nightly food special is called the “Doggie Bowl”.
Also be sure to add a trip to Blake Island State Park to your itinerary. This is the ancestral campground of the Suquamish and Duwamish Indian Tribes and believed to be the birthplace of Chief Seattle.

Foodies — and that includes your pooch — will enjoy Chinook salmon cooked Northwest Coast Indian-style around an open alder wood fire. You can take a doggie bag for back to the hotel if your cat happens to be traveling with you too.

Must do: Visit the Magnuson Dog Park at 7400 Sand Point Way. It offers pooches nine acres of fun to run and has beach access too.

  5. Alexandria, VA
  6. Portland, OR
  7. San Francisco
  8. South Lake Tahoe
  9. Los Angelas
  10. Boston

TopTenz.net also lists its Most Dog Friendly Cities in America:

  1. Austin, TX

Boasting 12 off-leash parks, Austin is a dream come true for both pet owners and the pets themselves. Whether cooling off in the creek at Bull Creek District Park or taking a tour of the city in horse-drawn carriage, there are plenty of ways for your dog to enjoy themselves while in Austin. A large number of restaurants and stores welcome dogs, so be sure to take them out with you when you’re hitting the town and enjoy the sights of this beautiful Texas city with your best four-legged friends.

  2. Colorado Springs, CO

All about nature and the great outdoors, Colorado Springs is a great place for dogs that love to romp and have fun. With numerous nature preserves and parks where you can let your dog off the leash and just run and enjoy themselves, it’s easy to forget that Colorado Springs also offers many pet friendly hotels where both you and your dog can be spoiled and pampered.

  3. Orlando, FL

When in Orlando, be sure to visit Sam Snead’s, the location where Governor Jeb Bush signed the doggy dining law that allows well-behaved dogs to sit with their owners at outside locations. Thanks to the location of Disney World and Universal Studios, many hotels in the area are pet friendly and even offer dog-sitting services while you and your family go and enjoy the park.

Weather and Your Pets

There’s still some summertime left and it’s good to remember your pets when it’s hot outside. High temperatures can be very dangerous if they can’t find a shady area or have ready access to water.

Some good tips from Heartland Connection:

Ensure that your pet has access to shade at all times of the day.  Your dog might be in the shade when you leave for work, but the sunlight moves throughout the day. Don’t allow your pet to be stranded in the scorching sun.

If you run or jog with your dog, take frequent water breaks for yourself and your dog. Remember that asphalt and concrete get hot quickly. You have rubber soles on your feet–your dog does not. On hot days, leave your dog at home.

And for those of us in Hurricane states, this Hurricane Season has been mild thus far, but it’s not over. Make sure when getting prepared for a hurricane to think about your animals.

From HoumaToday.com:

The basic options to consider are whether you’ll try to take pets with you, evacuate some or all of your livestock, or whether you’ll leave them at home and try to provide as much protection as possible.

Wherever you go for a storm, make sure you have at least five days’ worth of food, water, and medications for your pet.

Bring current medical records, including vaccination records, as well as an ID collar, pet carrier or cage, leash, a favorite toy, disinfectants, trash bags and old newspapers, food and water bowls, kitty litter and a current photo of the pet.
